Derek Jeter Returns To Yankees Lineup, Will Bat Second And Play Shortstop

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The New York Yankees announced on Sunday morning that captain Derek Jeter will return to their lineup. He was activated before the Yankees’ 1:05 p.m. Sunday game against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.

Jeter is penciled in at second on Joe Girardi’s lineup card and is playing the field at shortstop.

He took full advantage of the dramatic day by delivering an opposite field home run on the first pitch he saw from Rays’ starter Matt Moore. Jeter later delivered a single in his second at-bat, then grounded out in his third and fourth plate appearances. He was walked in the bottom of the ninth before Alfonso Soriano delivered the walk-off single that earned the Yankees to a 6-5 win.
